Singles WC to Jack Sock
ATP Stars, Local Georgia Tech Pair in Doubles Draw
ATLANTA, July 15, 2021 – Eddie Gonzalez, Tournament Director of the Truist Atlanta Open presented by Fiserv, announced a singles main draw wildcard and two main draw doubles wildcards into this year's ATP 250 event.
Tickets are available now for nine days of tennis action, July 24 – August 1, 2021, at Atlantic Station.
Former Truist Atlanta Open presented by Fiserv doubles champion and crowd favorite, Jack Sock has been offered and accepted a singles main draw wildcard and will team up with 2016 Atlanta singles champ, Nick Kyrgios in taking a doubles wildcard.
Sock is dangerous anytime he steps on the court. Still just 28, the Lincoln, Neb. native has been ranked as high as No. 8 in singles and No. 2 in doubles. He has won four career ATP singles titles and holds 14 ATP doubles titles including three majors. He won in Atlanta in 2014 and also won the year-end ATP finals in 2018 with Mike Bryan.
“It's an amazingly strong doubles list,” said Gonzalez. “The addition of Jack and Nick adds depth and star power to a loaded field.”
The Australian, Kyrgios is an underrated doubles player and won an ATP doubles title at the Lyon 250 in 2018. Besides Atlanta, he owns five additional ATP singles titles and wins over each of the “Big 3”- Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Joining Kyrgios and Sock as wildcards are a pair of student-athletes from Georgia Tech. Just coming off their freshman campaigns, Keshav Chopra and Andres Martin will be making the short trip from The Flats and taking to the big stage at Atlantic Station.
Martin, a redshirt freshman from Flowery Branch, Ga., is coming off a campaign that saw him go 11-9 in singles and 7-7 in doubles, but winning some important matches along the way for the Yellow Jackets. He reached the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championships (w/ McDaniel) losing in two tough sets to the No. 4 seeded duo. He defeated the No. 33 ranked player from Miami this spring and earned a doubles victory over the No. 10 team from Tennessee. A blue-chip recruit coming out of high school, Martin reached the quarterfinals in singles and the semis in doubles at the 2018 Easter Bowl.
Fun fact: Martin was a ballperson at the Truist Atlanta Open presented by Fiserv when he was 14 years old.
“I couldn't be more proud,” offered Martin. “I watched these guys when I was 11 and 12 years old. Now I will be out there with them.”
Chopra, a redshirt freshman from Marietta, sported a 10-7 singles record and 7-9 doubles record during fall tournaments and the 2020 regular season for Georgia Tech. That included winning the championship at the Georgia Tech Invite and winning doubles contests partnering with freshman Andres Martin against Auburn, The Citadel and No. 10 Tennessee in a one-week span in February. As a junior player, Chopra was ranked No. 5 nationally and No. 1 in Georgia for 2020.
“This is super special,” added Chopra. “I remember watching other players that received wildcards into the event and it gave me the belief that I could too.”
Georgia Tech Head Men's Tennis Coach, Kenny Throne was excited for his players and this opportunity.
“On behalf of Georgia Tech and American tennis, we appreciate this and your loyalty. Your actions show support. It's extremely well appreciated. These guys understand that and know how cool this is.”
