Nakashima, Fritz, Isner Through to Semis
ATLANTA, July 30, 2021 – Quarterfinal matches will be wrapped on Friday with the winners advancing to the semis on Saturday at the Truist Atlanta Open presented by Fiserv, in Midtown, Atlanta.
American Brandon Nakashima faced off against Australian Jordan Thompson for the second consecutive week on Friday. Nakashima prevailed at Los Cabos in three sets last week to advance to the semifinals. This week, they stayed on serve in the first four games of their Truist Atlanta Open quarterfinal. The American earned a break point at 2-2 and converted to take and early 3-2 lead. He would consolidate that break with a hold of serve for 4-2. A frustrated Thompson was serving well and continued to pop aces, getting to 4-5 and forcing Nakashima to serve for the set. He approached the net twice and aggressively broke back to even the set at 5-5. After two holds, the first set would be decided by a seven-point tiebreaker. Nakashima got the early mini break and kept the momentum to win the tiebreak 7-5.
The second consisted of great serving. The hot Georgia sun really sped up the court and allowed for both players to hit big serves and dictate rallies. At 5-6, Thompson was serving to stay in the match. He had a great pressure hold at 4-5 but was unable to get his second break in the next game. Nakashima, trying to break for the match, got multiple returns deep in the court to set up match point at 30-40.
“I was just trying to make returns and get into some rallies,” he said. “It really paid off in the end.”
While the Australian had been serving great, Nakashima finished the match with a cross-court backhand return winner to clinch the second set 7-5. The Los Cabos Open Finalist is playing outstanding tennis and will crack the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time in his young career. At just 19 years old, Brandon Nakashima will face the winner of Cameron Norrie and Emil Ruusuvuori in his second consecutive ATP semifinal match. This young man has a bright future for American tennis as he wins this match 7-6 (5), 7-5.
The second match of the day would see two big serving Americans facing off. The 6 '11” Reilly Opelka versus 6’5 Taylor Fritz. These two being such good friends it had been Fritz enjoying the matchup more with a 5-1 head to head record heading into today’s contest. The dominance of these two on serve would see the whole match go without a single break of serve for either competitor. The first set would see Fritz pull ahead in the tiebreaker to squeak out a 7-5 victory to go up one set to love.
The second set would be a similar contest however Fritz would see an opportunity to close out the match returning at 6-5 up 40-15. However, Opelka would save those two match points with an ace up the T and a 137 mile per hour body serve. After fighting to stay in the match it would be the Floridian who would win the second set breaker in order to even the match at 1 set all. The finalist from 2019 would not be frazzled by letting those two points slip as he would continue to battle to win a decisive third set tiebreaker 7-4.
