Professional Men’s Tennis Comes to Gwinnett County in 2020

 

John Isner Leads Top Eight Americans in Unique Format at Life Time Athletic in Peachtree Corners

ATLANTA, GA  June 24, 2020 – Professional men’s tennis will be a reality this summer in Peachtree Corners as the DraftKings All-American Team Cup, featuring the top-eight American men in the world rankings will descend on Gwinnett County for a unique singles team competition at Life Time Athletic and Tennis in Peachtree Corners. This is the latest in live events from GF Sports, which also owns Atlanta’s Truist Atlanta Open and the New York Open, held annually in February. The dates are July 3-5, with a patriotic Fourth of July theme in place.

 

The event allows ticketed fans into the Life Time stadium court with “social distancing” in place.

The event will benefit the Folded Flag Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that provides educational scholarships and support grants to the spouses and children of the U.S. military and government personnel who died as a result of hostile action or in an accident related to U.S. combat operations.  The winning team will present a $10k check to Folded Flag to help honor and support military families who have served our country.

 

Tickets are now available. The Friday and Saturday start time is 12pm, followed by a 6pm evening session start. Friday and Saturday sessions have 2 singles matches per session (2 during the day/2 in the evening) Start time on Sunday being 12pm with 4 consecutive singles matches to be played. A note that no onsite parking at Life Time is available unless patrons have a parking pass!

 

With the ATP Tour’s suspension of ATP events through the end of July due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the 2020 edition of the Truist Atlanta Open will not take place as scheduled. 

 

“I’m excited because this is a perfect chance to see the best American players in one weekend. It was an easy decision to partner with DraftKings and LifeTime, two important names in sports,” said Eddie Gonzalez, Tournament and Event Director for the DraftKings All-American Pro Team Cup. “The health and safety of everyone associated with this and any event today is paramount as we navigate any reopening amid the ongoing health crisis and coronavirus pandemic,” added Gonzalez.  

 

While other professional sports in the United States are starting a return to action, albeit without fans, the DraftKings All-American Team Cup is welcoming fans, with limited and measured ticket sales to the public.

Five-time Truist Atlanta Open and University of Georgia All-American John Isner, will headline the DraftKings All-American Team Cup field. Isner is currently ranked No. 21 and he will be joined by Taylor Fritz (No. 24), Reilly Opelka (No. 39), Sam Querrey (No. 45), Tennys Sangren (No. 55), Tommy Paul (No. 57), Steve Johnson (No. 63) and Frances Tiafoe (No. 81).

This is a team competition that features the top-eight American male tennis players, globally to help raise money for military charity partner, Folded Flag Foundation and help recognize and honor high school senior tennis players across metro Atlanta. “Team STRIPES” will include Isner, Querrey, Sandgren and Johnson, with Isner to serve as team captain. “Team STARS” will consist of Tiafoe, Opelka, Fritz, and Paul, with Tiafoe serving as team captain.

Scoring and details- 2 out of 3 regular scoring sets with 10-point match TB in lieu of full 3rd set. Chair umpire will officiate with players calling their own lines. No ball person team, each side of the court has a bin for balls that players have access to and another bin to place their towel. A court monitor will check these areas on each changeover to ensure enough balls, sanitize, etc. Pro Team Cup competition: 1st day, each win is worth 1 point. 2nd day, each win is worth 2 points, and 3rdday, each win is worth 3 points. In the event of a tie at the conclusion, the last match played participants will do a 7-point tiebreaker to determine overall team winner. Team winner will present a $10k check to Folded Flag Foundation and winning team will receive the 1st annual All-American Team Cup Trophy

“COVID-19 abruptly ended so many High School tennis team seasons, let alone HS Senior years.  So, we would like to help create a positive end to their senior year of high school as much as possible,”  stated Gonzalez.
